What is ISIR?

Posted on 1 May 2023
ISIR

ISIR stands for Initial Sample Inspection Report and is an important part of the sample review process. The report calls for the manufactured components to be measured and the key dimensions to be recorded at the sample stage before a product goes into mass production.

This allows for the repeatability and the accuracy of the part to be checked and any issues ironed out, before bulk volumes are manufactured.

The Process

Commonly, we receive enquiries for annual volumes of over 10,000 parts per annum, so it makes sense to run off a small batch for sample approval prior to completing the full volume manufacture and we would encourage our customers to have samples for approval.

  • A batch of 5 or 10 samples are produced (at either Chartway UK/Asia) and sent into the “Pre-Inspection” location for quality control to pick up
  • The customer drawing is annotated to give each dimension a label/reference
  • A full dimensional check is completed on each sample, and all dimensions are recorded in a table (matching the labels on the annotated drawing) to show if they are within the tolerance limits
  • If we feel that the parts have passed this inspection; the samples are packaged with the dimensional report, and sent to customer for their approval.
  • If we find any dimensions out of tolerance, we will internally reject the samples before they reach the customer, and will organize for them to be re-made.

Advantages of ISIR + Sample Approval

  • Ensures accuracy
    • Checking the samples up front allows us to make any required changes to the machine setup prior to bulk manufacture, to ensure the parts are made accurately and efficiently.
  • Saves time:
    • Although the sample approval process may seem like an addition to the overall lead time; it is a lot quicker to change the production method slightly at sample stage, compared to having to re-manufacture all component parts at bulk volume if anything is incorrect.

We offer bespoke quality inspection services at Chartway, so if you require your parts to be dimensionally checked or tested by our experience quality control team, please get in touch.
